Dina Yazdani,
Occidental College
As one of the few Muslim students at Occidental, I feel that I have a responsibility to help educate my religion to others and show how religion can be used for good. I am the Vice President of the Muslim Student Association, and the President of OneVoice, a club aimed at promoting a two state solution between Israel and Palestine. I also intern at the Muslim Public Affairs Council. The underlying work all these organizations does is interfaith work. Without it, we would not make progress toward a more peaceful and accepting society.
The Interfaith Council at Occidental College has taken on social justice as our main focus for our interfaith work. We have responded to the President's challenge by showing that different communities can come together for the greater good through many of the great events we have participated in, and organized on campus. We have been involved with food justice, participated in the MLK Day of Service, 9/11 Day of Service, helping other religious clubs put events on campus. In addition, we helped demystify Islamophobia by bringing in Dr. Jack Shaheen and screening his film "Reel Bad Arabs", helped set up a panel to discuss LGBT rights and Christianity, as well as most recently organizing a panel of a Muslim, Christian, Catholic and Jewish religious leaders to talk about gender.
