Armaan Rowther
University of California, Irvine
Armaan Ahmed Rowther is the recipient of the 2011-12 XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship, established at UC Irvine in 2004 to recognize students committed to ethical leadership, peace and positive global relations. Armaan is a UCI junior majoring in both biological sciences and public health policy; he is also pursuing certification in conflict analysis and resolution. Armaan was born in Santa Ana into a family that includes Pakistani, Ladakhi and Tibetan backgrounds.
With project and funding support from the UCI Dalai Lama Scholarship and Dalai Lama Fellows, Armaan has launched a campus and community interfaith initiative called Leap of Faith, part of the President Obama’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. He is working with UCI student organizations and local community partners to foster interfaith kinship on campus and encourage coalition building among individuals of varied faiths. This year’s activities include an Oxfam hunger banquet (April 16), a day of service in partnership with the Center for Living Peace (April 28), and a day of fasting that will include reflection and discussion about issues of hunger, faith and cooperation (May 1).
Armaan will serve as the moderator for the Living Peace event on May 2, 2012: A Conversation with Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan.
You can find more information about UCI's work here and here.
I believe that bridging divisions among people is crucial to solving many, if not all, of the most urgent problems facing our world today, from violent conflict to the destruction of the environment.
